State of Missouri
1822

The new state of Missouri hardly seems populated enough to qualify as a state.  But by this time the government was moving the Native American's farther west and away from the settlements.  The Kentucky hunter's and other experienced pioneers were beginning to move into the new land to to take advantage of cheap land and plentiful wildlife and to co-mingle with the established French settlers. Some familier names start appearing such as Loutra (otter skin) Creek, later Loutre (otter), Cote Sans Dessein (hill [slope, bank] without design) and the settlement of Gasconade.  Gasconade was later to be the first county seat of the new Gasconade County.  Loutre Island at the end of Loutre Creek was also a territorial post office before statehood.
