May Meeting in Chamois!
The quarterly meeting of the Society will be held Monday, May 28, 2012 in Chamois at the Lions Club Community Center in Riverside Park. The meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. with a meal catered by Annie and Doug Schwartz of Main Street Market in Chamois. Dinner will consist of ham, potatoes, green beans, salad, tea coffee or lemonade and dessert. Cost of the meal is $10.00.
The program following the meal will be presented by Tom Rafiner, an independent researcher and historian. Rafiner has ancestors who lived in Cass County MO during the Civil War and who were driven from the county during the implementation of the infamous General Order No. 11 in 1863. His research into the lives of the 1,700 families who lived in Cass County in 1860 has carried him all over the Midwest and to the National Archives in Washington D.C. For the past three years he has been telling the story of these families throughout Missouri and Kansas as a speaker for the State Historical Society's Speakers Bureau. Tom has written Caught Between Three Fires: Cass County, MO., Chaos & Order No. 11. The book will be for sale at the meeting.
The Townley House Museum in Chamois will be open on the 28th beginning at 4:30 for anyone who would like to visti. Be sure to get your reservations in by May 22 to attend this interesting presentation; call the OCHS office at 573 897-2932 or e-mail us to make reservations. SEE YOU THERE!!
